January 16, 2010

All has been quite on the blog, but not totally quite in our world. Sadie received her new brace; ended up having to go in to have some adjustments made and allow some time for a blister that formed to heal before she could try again. This week she started weaning into the brace and wore it for the first full day (morning until bed) yesterday. It was a process of wearing it for a few hours here and there to try and get her foot use to it and after sending her to school one day with it on and picking her up it was very clear the shoes she had were not right for the brace. We went on a shoe shopping adventure (trust me this was an adventure and please never take for granted being able to just walk into any store and pick up any shoe to later purchase in your size; life is not that simple for Sadie). With the new shoe came new feelings as the shoes we ended up getting were really designed for someone with issues of flat foot or brace and it alone holds her foot in a different position. Sadie has taken to all the newness very well and we are very proud of how she has handled it all. She is sore... very sore, but not able to really discern if she is more or less sore in or out of the brace. Our hope is that after some consistency in the brace she will start to feel some relief.

On another note... Sadie started coughing a few weeks ago, nothing major, just seemed like she was fighting a bit of a cough. Over last week it became clear it was getting worse not better and during the nights it was horrible and she was getting very little sleep (even on medication). On Friday we finally made her an appointment to see her regular doctor who confirmed the cough was actually bronchitis (I am fairly sure this is a first for Sadie). Upper respiratory issues can be very serious when you are immune suppressing medications and her primary doctor asked that we call her rheumatologist to confer regarding her medications. The rheumatologist we spoke with (it was after hours in the clinic) was very concerned and asked that we call back on Monday if we haven't seen dramatic improvement on the antibiotic. She also said "no humira this week". So, on that note, the good is... she is improved a bit all ready. She has medication that helped her get a very solid nights rest and she seemed to hardly cough much today. The other side of this is, we don't know how her body will react without the humira for a week. I am extremely hopeful (an will/am smothering in prayer) that this does not affect Sadie's arthritis. The rheumotologist did say if she had any "increased joint issues" to call and we can decide if she will okay for the shot, but it is not a very good idea while on the antibiotic.

So, those are the biggest things going on at the moment. Sadie had her eye appointment (these are done every six months as arthritis can attack your eyes and if this goes un-noticed or un-treated can lead to blindness). Her eyes checked out good which has been the case every time we are in there - PRAISE GOD!

In the coming weeks we really have very little on the calendar which is a relief and a blessing. This comes at the right time as even though Bill has been able to take Sadie to some of her more recent appointments, I am feeling a bit taxed by doctors and medical stuff in general. The next big appointment to speak of will be with the surgeon on 12th of February. At that time he will be assessing if he feels the brace is doing what he had hoped.

Please continue to pray with us. The brace hasn't' been easy. It is not comfortable, it is big and cumbersome and she is in a great deal of pain (especially when we are up walking around or doing errands). Please pray for quick healing of the bronchitis and no adverse affects of her arthritis from not taking her shot this week. Please pray for healing... it's our ultimate prayer, but mostly that His spirit resides in her heart today, tomorrow and forever. We continue to pray she will turn to Him through any and all suffering.

God Bless!
