June 24, 2011

I wanted to do a quick update:

Sadie had a very long night with almost no sleep. The night started with a negative reaction to one of the medications that was causing Sadie to fall asleep for short periods and then wake up feeling as if the dreams she was having were real. This went on for hours. She would fall asleep and wake up unaware of where she was and then feel totally frustrated that what experience she just had wasn't true. She would feel like she was asleep for a long time which in actuality she was only sleeping for about 3 minutes at a time. Then the pain catheter they had in her leg to provide a block to her right leg actually fell out about 12:00a.m. She has just settled around 11:00 and was doing pretty well, but then the pain started to come again strong and it was realized the catheter had fallen out. This created a new issue of chasing pain and trying to figure out what to do. That then created a new wave of nausea and a very long night with little to no sleep.

By 8:00am they had the head pain doc in with a plan to replace the drug she was having the bad reaction too (they stopped giving it to her already, but he felt she needed something else) and to change up her pain medications. Over about an hour they implemented all changes and she was starting to finally feel like she could actually sleep. By 11am she was asleep and so was I. I slept for about an hour and she slept for almost 2 hours!!! The only reason she woke is that the ortho doc came in to put her permanent cast on (which is SO cool and made Sadie happy - was the first time we saw her personality come back).

At this moment she is eating and feeling pretty good. She is really tired, but hunger trumped fatigue. Obviously, this is positive. Other positives... she seems to not be dealing with nausea anymore. She has been out of bed several times to use the restroom which all the docs/nurses/etc are saying is amazing!

The remainder of today is focusing on catching up on sleep and maybe switching some of her meds to oral... steps needed to go home.

I really feel that sleep is what is/was needed; it is hard to fight pain when you are so tired. That said, even that small amount of sleep gave me some much needed hope that she is heading down the right path now.

Again, thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers.
